TikTok is adding an AI Shopping Assistant and one-click checkout as it pushes further into online shopping. The new tools let users ask questions about products and buy directly from brands without leaving TikTok.

The features were announced October 5 at Advertising Week New York and are initially rolling out in the U.S. TikTok is building them with commerce and payment companies including Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe.

What is TikTok’s AI Shopping Assistant?

TikTok’s Shopping Assistant is a conversational AI tool that helps users find and evaluate products.

It can answer questions about product details, sizing, shipping and availability, while keeping the context of the conversation and remembering the shopper’s needs. TikTok says the assistant is being added across several points in its app.

The goal is simple: users can ask about a product instead of leaving TikTok to search for the information elsewhere.

How Does TikTok’s One-Click Checkout Work?

TikTok’s new Buy Direct feature lets users purchase products directly from a brand through TikTok.

A shopper can buy an item from the For You feed with one click, keeping the transaction inside the app. TikTok says the feature is being built with its commerce and payment partners.

This expands purchasing beyond TikTok Shop. Brands can use Buy Direct to sell through the wider TikTok experience rather than relying only on the platform’s dedicated shopping marketplace.

Is Buy Direct the Same as TikTok Shop?

No.

TikTok Shop is the company’s dedicated in-app marketplace. Buy Direct brings checkout into the wider TikTok platform, including the For You feed.

That difference is significant for brands that already promote products through TikTok videos and advertising. Instead of sending a potential customer to another website, a brand can turn that interaction into an in-app purchase.

TikTok Shop generated an estimated $15.8 billion in U.S. sales in 2025, according to eMarketer figures cited by TechCrunch. That represented about 18% of U.S. social commerce.

What Can the AI Shopping Assistant Answer?

TikTok says the assistant provides real-time guidance on:

  • Product details
  • Size and fit
  • Shipping
  • Availability
  • Purchasing

It also understands the context of a conversation and remembers the user’s requirements as the interaction continues.

That gives TikTok a way to keep shoppers inside the platform when they have questions that could otherwise send them to Google, a retailer’s website or another AI chatbot.

Which Companies Are Partnering with Tiktok?

TikTok is working with Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe, among other commerce and payment providers, to develop its new agentic commerce tools.

Salesforce said its Commerce Cloud integration will support TikTok’s new shopping experiences while connecting merchants’ existing commerce infrastructure with TikTok.

Why is TikTok Expanding Its Shopping Tools Now?

TikTok already has a large product-discovery audience.

The company’s latest economic impact report says 54 million Americans purchased a product after watching a TikTok video. TikTok also said activity on the platform contributed $81 billion to U.S. business GDP.

The new tools give TikTok another way to convert that product discovery into transactions.

The company is calling the broader push Agentic Commerce, combining AI assistance with transactions rather than limiting AI to recommendations or search.

What Else Did TikTok Announce?

TikTok also announced Agentic Leads, an AI agent aimed at helping advertisers capture and qualify potential customers.

The tool can operate through TikTok Direct Messages and lead forms on advertisers’ websites. TikTok also unveiled the TikTok Ad Network, which allows U.S. advertisers to extend campaigns across a network of nearly 400,000 apps worldwide.

The company is also expanding AI automation for Search Ads and its Smart+ advertising products.

How Does TikTok’s Move Fit into AI Shopping?

TikTok is entering a market where AI agents are increasingly moving from product recommendations to actual transactions.

Shopify has also been expanding its infrastructure for browser-based AI agents that can interact with checkout, while other technology companies are developing AI-powered purchasing systems.

TikTok’s difference is its starting point: the shopping experience begins with short-form video and product discovery rather than a traditional search box.

A user can see a product, ask an AI assistant about it and buy it through TikTok.

When Will TikTok’s AI Shopping Tools Launch?

TikTok announced the Shopping Assistant and Buy Direct on October 5, 2026. The initial rollout is focused on the U.S.

TikTok has not announced a full global rollout date. The company is introducing the tools alongside its wider agentic commerce programme for brands and advertisers.
